چکیده

We relate bosonic density uctuations of a Fermi uid in one dimension to surface uctuations. Thereby we easily identify the parameters governing the low energy, Luttinger liquid behavior. In particular we recover the Haldane relation in case the surface is tilted only transversely to the Euclidean time direction. We develop a hydrodynamic uctuation theory for the world lines of particles. Since in this description the particles interact through long range forces, the drift becomes nonlocal, while the current is white noise, as in the short range case.

Bosonization, vicinal surfaces, and hydrodynamic fluctuation theory.

Through a Euclidean path integral we establish that the density fluctuations of a Fermi fluid in one dimension are related to vicinal surfaces and to the stochastic dynamics of particles interacting through long range forces with inverse distance decay. In the surface picture one easily obtains the Haldane relation, and identifies the scaling exponents governing the low energy, Luttinger liquid...

All-electron first-principles investigations of the energetics of vicinal Cu surfaces

Using first-principles calculations we studied the energetics surface energy, step energy, stability with respect to faceting of the lowand high-Miller-index vicinal Cu surfaces, namely, the 111 , 100 , 110 , 311 , 331 , 210 , 211 , 511 , 221 , 711 , 320 , 553 , 410 , 911 , and 332 surfaces. Our calculations are based on density-functional theory employing the all-electron full-potential linear...

Density-functional theory investigation of oxygen adsorption at Pd(11N)(N=3,5,7) vicinal surfaces

We present a density-functional theory study addressing the on-surface adsorption of oxygen at the Pd(11N) (N = 3, 5, 7) vicinal surfaces, which exhibit (111) steps and (100) terraces of increasing width. We find the binding to be predominantly governed by the local coordination at the adsorption site. This leads to very similar bonding properties at the threefold step sites of all three vicina...

Analysis of terrace width distributions on vicinal copper surfaces using the ‘Wigner surmise’: comparison with Gaussian approach

We have analyzed the terrace width distribution on a large number of Cu (100) and (111) vicinal surfaces using the standard Gaussian fit as well as by using an alternative analytical distribution, which comes from the perspective of fluctuation phenomena and is referred to as the generalized Wigner surmise. The chief motivation is to extract optimally the strength A of the elastic repulsion bet...

Ab initio density functional studies of stepped TaC surfaces

We report on density-functional total-energy calculations of the step formation and interaction energies for vicinal TaC~001! surfaces. Our calculations show that doubleand triple-height steps are favored over singleheight steps for a given vicinal orientation, which is in agreement with recent experimental observations. We provide a description of steps in terms of atomic displacements and cha...
